Like most people, you've probably tried at some point to stop smoking. And like most people you'll have had a variety of reasons for wanting to do so:
- You realized the amount of money you spend a week on your habit
- You just redecorated and don't want to ruin it with nicotine
- You are worried about the long term health risks attributed to smoking
- You are all grown up and it's no longer cool to smoke!
So what do you have in common with millions of other smokers around the world?
You tried to quit, and you failed miserably!
First things first, it's not your fault. An estimated 17 million people try to quit each year, many of whom are still smoking a year later.
So What Makes Quitting So Hard?
In a word, nicotine.
Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Yes, you read that right. If we compare nicotine to cocaine, we find that cocaine has an addiction rate of 75-80%, and nicotine ranks just behind it at 60-70%. Looking at these figures, is it any wonder it's hard to quit?
What About Nicotine Patches, Gum, Inhalators etc?
There is no doubt that these products have their place in helping you to stop smoking. However, there are a couple of concerns:
- You can become addicted to these products! It stands to reason that because the majority of these products still contain nicotine, you run the risk of becoming addicted to the products themselves.
- They are generally expensive. Some of these products cost more than smoking! If money is your main concern, you are going to be less likely to try these products in the first place.
What Happens When We Get Addicted?
Simply, we enjoy pleasure. Whenever something pleasurable happens to us, our brain pays attention. Slowly but surely our brain sends us signals that we would like more pleasure. Nothing wrong with that. Why wouldn't we want more pleasure in our lives. Unfortunately, in the case of nicotine, our body finds nicotine extremely pleasurable. We become relaxed, it helps us destress after a hard day at work. And herein lies the problem.
Let us take for example stress. When we became stressed, we lit a cigarette and in doing so, we found that we began to feel calmer. Our brain takes note of this fact so that the next time we feel stressed, it'll know what to do. It becomes a crutch. When we couple the pleasurable effects that smoking has with it's addictive properties, it becomes very VERY difficult to try to disassociate what our brains have learnt over what could be many years.
Now if you've tried to stop smoking before, you'll know that as soon as we become stressed we begin to think about cigarettes, and the more we try to not think about having a smoke, the more we do think about it!
Eventually we think to ourselves, "I'm going though a really stressful time, I'll just have one cigarette". And right there is the beginning of failure. One cigarette is enough to tell your brain that all it needs to do is tell you the next time you get stressed you can just have "one" cigarette, it'll be ok.
So What Can I Do?
In essence, what we want to do is find a way of removing the strong association to pleasure that smoking provides. By far the most effective way of doing this is with hypnosis. If your only experience with hypnosis was by watching a TV program, you may be mistaken for thinking that it's only used for making people do silly things!
However, therapeutic hypnosis is completely different from stage hypnosis. Using hypnosis, we are able to bypass your conscious mind (that part of us that we are aware of), and talk directly to the subconscious part of your brain. It's this part of your brain that controls cravings. In our day to day living, we don't have access to this part of our brain, and so although we can think we want to stop, our subconscious may not! And folks, if your subconscious doesn't want to quit smoking, it won't matter how hard you try, it won't happen.
You may have heard of people who were able to give up smoking "cold turkey", and they found it easy. That people is the power of having your subconscious mind working with you.
So by working with the subconscious under hypnosis, we are able to change the way it thinks about smoking and in doing so, you'll begin to find that giving up gets easier. You won't crave for a smoke when you become stressed, in fact under ideal conditions, you won't actually think about a cigarette full stop. Ever!
It's never too late to stop smoking.
