Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy

Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy and How it Works

Hypnotherapy is to Stop-Smoking as Door is to Frame, as Chair is to Table. Mention hypnotherapy to most people, and they will think of smoking cessation. Mention giving up smoking naturally to most people, and they will think of hypnotherapy.

But what is hypnotherapy?

Well, hypnotherapy is hypnosis plus therapy.

In the hypnosis part, you go into a state of relaxation that varies from a light relaxation to a deeper half-asleep half-awake state of trance. At the end, you awaken fully, feeling relaxed and refreshed.

In the therapy part, various techniques are used to achieve the desired outcome. These days techniques like NLP and EFT are so advanced and so effective, they are often used by hypnotherapists without the hypnosis part!

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It utilises the relationship between how we think, how we communicate, and our feelings and behaviour.

NLP works a bit like this: You may be starting with thinking your glass is half-empty and anesthetising your sense of emptyness with cigarettes. Then you may be coming out of the hypnotherapist's delighted that your glass is half-full and so fulfilled, the desire to smoke has gone.

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It uses the principle that the cause of all negative emotions (and therefore behaviour) is a disruption in the body's energy system.

EFT works a bit like this: You may be starting with feeling a bit bad without a cigarette, due to various negative emotions stored in your body as "energy". Then you may be coming out of the hypnotherapist's feeling so peaceful and calm, the desire to smoke has gone.

Most people have the impression that stop smoking hypnotherapy consists of going into the hypnotherapist's, lying down, becoming unconscious, and walking out a totally different person. Popular television and theatre programs, especially in the past, do nothing to dispel this view. Subjects are chosen for the show that look unconscious when they are hypnotised, giving the popular illusion of a state of deep sleep. Also highly suggestible subjects are chosen. Most modern techniques are so good, there is no need for this suggestibility. Certainly only a very small percentage of hypnosis subjects go into a sleep-like trance, maybe 4%!

So when you go to your hypnotherapist to give up smoking, you may be pleasantly surprised to remain awake and become free from cravings. If you have already made an appointment, it is good to print out this article and read it before you attend to allay any fears should this be your first time. And most of all, congratulate yourself for making the decision to be free!

A virus caught along with 5 other students at university at the end of 1986, plus medical negligence, meant that I got smokers lung at a relatively young age. In desperation for help with my symptoms and quality of life, I turned to complementary therapy, and I have outlived one doctor's prognosis by over 12 years now.

I am now a complementary therapist, author and trainer specializing in techniques referred to as "energy psychology". Want to use this article? You Quit Smoking How Many Times?

How many attempts do you really need to quit smoking for good? Most people are curious and want to know exactly how many times it takes to really quit. They believe that getting a strong grasp of the number of tries is important to them. Some people say what this information can do for you might just confuse you rather than give you strength. Knowing the number of tries might just give you a boost in confidence as your quit date approaches. Remember, this is the date you need to quit smoking. Knowing the amount of times it might take you to quit smoking will help you not feel like a failure if it takes you more than one try. This information is extremely important to you simply because many people feel like a failure if they cannot quit on their first try.

When looking at the majority of people, and in all honesty to them, it usually takes at least two attempts to successfully quit. Most people would love to quit after the first attempt but it is usually takes two attempts at a minimum. Sometimes it may take three or more. You may wonder why it may take two or more attempts. Quite frankly, most people have the attitude and belief that quitting smoking is very simple. Many people are caught off guard when they find it harder to quit than they thought. It is not easy to quit.

You have an addiction to nicotine that will not be easily broken. Most often it is not something that can be accomplished in a single attempt. You will find that your chances of being successful are much lower if you try to quit on your own if you don't get some sort of help. Making a plan for quitting is essential, no matter how many attempts you make trying to quit.

So, being aware of how difficult it really it is to quit smoking could be very significant to you. You will be in a much better position to develop your plan and quit if you are aware of the challenges you face in the beginning and not the end. Knowing your challenges when developing your plan will be helpful particularly because you know the reasons you smoke cigarettes in the first place. If you stress out and smoke to cut out the stress you can make your plan to quit accordingly.

If you should attempt to quit smoking without a plan, you might just find that you are not able to quit in a single try. This will increase the number of attempts you will have to make to quit. It is not impossible for you to make a plan; it just means that you will have to identify the challenges that you may encounter and ways to work through them. When you develop your plan you can decide what to do when a temptation approaches or with any other potential problems. This will definitely help you succeed.

So, now you know. Deciding to quit on a whim will, without a doubt, decrease your chances of success simply because you will encounter many unrecognized problems and not know how to work through them. Take time to create and organize your plan, it means your success or failure. Taking your time with the details means that you will ultimately be successful. Your confidence will grow day by day rather than having a feeling that you will not be successful. This will help you elimate many problems simply because their elimination is extremely important for your success. You can quit smoking now--with a little wise planning.
